Laming eyes Perth with Payroll

Richard Laming

 is keen to take Payroll to Perth for the Kingston Town Classic (1800m) on December 9 but a lack of travel arrangements may result in his mare tackling the Pakenham Cup on the same day.

The Eclipse Stakes winner wasn't quite ready to board the chartered flight to Perth from Melbourne on Sunday evening, a little over 24 hours after her gritty Sandown victory, and is now relying on fickle cargo flights if she is to travel west.

"There isn't any scheduled flights just for horses between now and when we would need to travel so we are waiting to hear if we can get a pallet," Laming said.

"If we can find a spot that would have us in Perth on the Monday or Tuesday before she is due to race, that would be great but it is really out of our hands."

Laming said Payroll pulled up a little jaded following the Eclipse Stakes and his focus was on her recovery this week.

"She knew she had a tough run, she puts a lot into her races so it wasn't surprising to see her pull up the way she did," he said.

"We will give her an easy week, just take her down to the beach and then look at Perth if we can get a flight, if not she can run at Pakenham in the Cup."

Payroll placed third in the $1 million Magic Millions Stayers Cup (2200m) earlier this year and Laming said a return trip to the Gold Coast for the restricted contest is her main aim this preparation.

"There is no Stratum Star around this year and the race is worth very good money so we are planning to head back for sure," Laming said.

"She has taken a long time to mature but we feel she is has now developed.

"That is why we've had a light spring, spaced her runs because the Gold Coast has always been in the back of our minds and I didn't want to rush her during the spring."
