The Papua New Guinea flag consists of red and black triangles. The flagpole has a black triangle on one side and a red triangle on the right. The oblique sides of the two triangles connect the upper left corner and the lower right corner of the flag ground. There are five white pentagons in the black triangle, one of which is smaller. The arrangement of five stars symbolizes the Southern Cross. On the red triangle is a yellow bird of paradise (also known as the bird of paradise).
