In a bid to shed the unflattering and stereotypical ‘Pandu hawaldar’ image of an average policeman, the Maharashtra Police, in a first, will be conducting a three-day exhibition. Informative stalls will be put up at the Marol Police Training School from January 5 to make citizens aware of how far the police have reached in terms of modern investigation techniques and tools. These stalls will have equipment related to cyber forensics, forensic sciences, fire fighting and forest protection. The department has invited school and college students, apart from general public to visit the exhibition. Polygraph and lie detector tests will be demonstrated in front of children.

State Director General of Police Satish Mathur and JJ Hospital Dean TP Lahane will be present at the inaugural day of exhibition, sources said. According to the sources, there will be around 20 to 25 stalls of cyber forensics, forensic science, fire brigade, civil defence, forest security, Maharashtra State Security Corporation and equipment meant for safety and security of offices and buildings. Other important stalls will aim to impart information about explosives, petroleum and narcotic substances.

“These stalls will be more of informative stalls, wherein visitors will be given knowledge of how Prevention of Corruption Act cases are investigated, knowledge on firearms, voice decibel calculation and limitation, lie detector and polygraphy test, checking of security features of currency notes, DNA, adulteration, fingerprint checking will be imparted,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

He added, the idea is to make general public and younger generation aware where our police department stands when it comes to investigation of cases, and how various cases are investigated.

“We have contacted children from Class 8 to graduation from various schools and colleges in the city. Every year police Raising Day used to be celebrated at local police station level, but this time, the department has decided to use the platform as an informative interaction with people and students,” said the officer.
