The U.S. crackdown on Chinese companies has widened, following the likes of Huawei and Hikvision. The US is targeting China's largest security inspection equipment maker, Tongfang Vistor, saying its expanding presence in Europe poses a threat to western security companies, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. As of Thursday, Tongfang Had not responded to the Global Times' request for comment. But the company previously told the Wall Street Journal that The Tongfang Vistas system operates independently and that its products don't pose a security risk. Lu Xiang, a researcher with the Institute of American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times On Thursday that the United States is unwarranted in cracking down on Chinese high-tech companies with technological or market advantages.

The Wall Street Journal, citing documents and people familiar with the matter, said the attempt to drive Tongfang out of Europe was being led by A group of US agencies such as the NATIONAL Security Council, which also planned to join forces with European governments. The Wall Street Journal said the U.S. now plans to block Tongfang in many European countries and wants to help American companies win contracts. On May 26, the newspaper quoted the state department, according to a memo American diplomats are trying to prevent tongfang reverse in Greece, Hungary, Italy and Portugal, Germany and the company department of defense to provide the goods the X-ray scanners and remote screening system, American officials argue that these devices may be in the United States and other NATO forces used in some of the action.

Founded in 1997 at Tsinghua University, Tongfang Vision is a supplier of security products and solutions, providing customers in 170 countries and regions with security technologies, products and comprehensive security solutions and services, according to its official website. According to the US State Department, Tongfang Has gained 90 per cent of the market for maritime cargo screening equipment in Europe and 50 per cent of the baggage and cargo screening equipment market in European airports. But Tongfang Vistas disputes these figures, saying its market share is about 70 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively.

According to an internal State Department memo dated May 8 reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Tongfang Vistas is competing for business in more than a dozen European countries. Finland, NATO's partner, chose Tongwei this month to supply cargo scanners on its border with Russia, despite lobbying by American diplomats. Sources close to the matter said that Finnish customs had found no security reasons to refuse the tongfang Visv equipment.

The report says security scanners used for people and goods have raised questions about the risks of cross-border surveillance by countries. Systems that check cargo at ports and luggage at airports and train stations are increasingly linked to databases containing shipping manifest information and passenger information, including passports, fingerprints and other details, that could give Tongfang Vivendi and similar companies access to personal and business information. In a separate May 26 memo, the State Department said U.S. officials were concerned that Tongfang Viewport would hand over the data to Chinese authorities. The memo warned that Tongfang's access to information on European infrastructure nodes raised security concerns about civilian and military transport among NATO members.

The Wall Street Journal reported on March 28, citing the response of Tongfang Vistor, saying that the company was unaware of the us action and that it did not receive any state aid or government instructions. The company said its products don't pose a security risk, don't contain secret access points and all data is kept with customers. "All the data generated by our equipment belongs only to our customers -- neither to us nor to eu member states, and in no way to the Chinese government or any other entity," stressed Mr Bos, deputy general manager of The Dutch subsidiary of Tongfang Viv. "Our customers -- border control and customs authorities, ports and airports -- are the sole owners of the data."

The TSA effectively barred Tongfang from most U.S. airport markets in 2014 after completing a classified investigation, according to a TSA memo reviewed by the Wall Street Journal. In an interview with the Global Times in 2018, a person in charge of Tongfang Vistor revealed that its products had been "unfairly treated" in the US, failing to open the market in the field of civil aviation security, and could only provide security equipment for some hotels and supermarkets.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Tongfang Vistas has entered dozens of countries and priced out competitors in the US and UK. But Tongfang Retorts that it has failed to beat its rivals by selling below cost or subsidising its products. The plant in Warsaw, Poland, allows the company to set competitive prices for its products, company executives say.

Lv Xiang 29, told the global times reporter said, with no public evidence of "security reasons" a threat to the Chinese enterprise has become one of America's government idiomatic means any technical or market advantages of high-tech enterprises in China is likely to be so kind of excuse to hit, "tongfang reverse but proof that America is the latest victim of the normal operation and development of China's enterprise." Engadget, a technology news website, said in a report on Tuesday that, as with huawei, there was no public evidence that Tongfang Viewport had sent the data it had collected to China. "The US is asking European countries to replace Tongfang's equipment with similar US products, and if the Chinese company is kicked out, the beneficiary will be the US."
