G7 members pledged to wean themselves off Russian energy dependence, including phasing out or banning imports of Russian oil, the group said Thursday.

Leaders of the GROUP of Seven (G7) and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a joint statement after a video conference Thursday that they will ensure that these measures are implemented in a timely and orderly manner and that countries have enough time to find alternative energy supplies.

The statement said the G7 would ban or block the provision of "critical services" on which Russia depends, increase sanctions against individuals, and further crack down on Russian banks.

According to the statement, the G7 has provided or pledged additional support to Ukraine worth more than $24 billion. The group will continue to provide military assistance to Ukraine and expand cooperation with Ukraine in information, economic and energy security. In the coming weeks, the G7 will discuss with the Ukrainian government and international financial institutions options for long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Ukraine.
